Antenatal screening involves performing tests during pregnancy to assess the health of the unborn baby and the mother. These tests allow problems to be detected earlier and at a stage where an informed decision and/or treatment can be undertaken. Antenatal screening tests for conditions and diseases such as HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, Down's syndrome, Edward's syndrome, Patau's syndrome, sickle cell disease, and thalassaemia.
