Carotid Artery Disease Expert Witnesses

Carotid Artery Disease occurs when one or both of the carotid arteries in the neck become narrowed by a build-up of fatty material known as atherosclerosis. The narrowing can restrict blood flow, while plaque or blood clots may break away and travel towards the brain. This can increase the risk of a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or stroke. Cases involving carotid artery disease can raise complex medico-legal questions. These may relate to diagnosis, severity of carotid stenosis, atherosclerosis, symptoms and the timing of investigations or treatment. Experts may also consider previous TIA or stroke, vascular imaging, treatment decisions, carotid intervention, causation and subsequent clinical outcomes. Experts may review medical records, carotid duplex ultrasound, CT or MR angiography, neurological investigations and treatment documentation.
