Catheterisation Expert Witnesses

C atheterisation (urinary) involves inserting a flexible tube into the bladder to allow urine to drain. Catheters can be intermittent or remain in place for a period of time. Cases involving catheter use can raise complex medico-legal questions. These may relate to clinical assessment, insertion, maintenance, infection, trauma, documentation and subsequent outcomes. NICE recognises infection and urethral trauma among the issues associated with catheter use.
