Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a hip condition that affects children and young people during growth. It occurs when the upper part of the femur slips at the growth plate. Symptoms can include hip, groin, thigh or knee pain, limping and reduced hip movement. Cases involving this condition can raise complex medico-legal questions. These may relate to recognition, diagnosis, imaging, referral and surgical treatment. Experts may also consider delayed diagnosis, disease progression, avascular necrosis and subsequent outcomes.
