Professor Aneil Malhotra

Professor Aneil Malhotra is a Consultant Cardiologist with subspecialist expertise in sports cardiology and inherited cardiac conditions. He holds NHS, academic and private appointments in Manchester and is actively involved in the cardiovascular assessment of both general cardiology patients and athletic populations ranging from recreational individuals to elite professional athletes. His clinical practice encompasses general cardiology including the assessment of chest pain, palpitations, syncope and exercise intolerance. He has a particular focus on distinguishing physiological cardiac adaptation from pathological disease in athletes. He has extensive experience in the interpretation of 12-lead ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, exercise tolerance testing, and advanced cardiac imaging including echocardiography and cardiac MRI. He is regularly involved in pre-participation cardiovascular screening programmes and the longitudinal follow up of individuals with suspected or confirmed cardiac pathology. His practice includes risk stratification for sudden cardiac death, particularly in young individuals and athletes, and he works closely with multidisciplinary teams in the management of complex cardiovascular conditions.

Professor Malhotra’s research focuses on sports cardiology, cardiovascular screening and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. His work includes the evaluation of ECG interpretation strategies, risk stratification tools, and the role of cardiac imaging in identifying underlying pathology in athletic populations. His research program of work focuses on identifying predictors of sudden cardiac death in young people. He has a particular interest in the interface between physiological adaptation and disease, as well as in emerging technologies including artificial intelligence in cardiovascular diagnostics. His research aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of screening programmes and to inform clinical guidelines and policy at both national and international level.

Professor Malhotra is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He teaches medical students, junior doctors and specialist trainees in cardiology, with a focus on clinical assessment, ECG interpretation and cardiovascular imaging. He is also involved in the training of healthcare professionals in sports cardiology and delivers lectures at national and international conferences. He is actively involved in shaping clinical services related to cardiovascular screening and sports cardiology, including the development of structured screening pathways and multidisciplinary care models. He contributes to national, international and organisational policy development, particularly in relation to athlete cardiac screening and the prevention of sudden cardiac death. He has experience in leading clinical teams, supervising junior doctors and allied health professionals, and delivering high quality, guideline-based care within both NHS and private sector settings.
