Ms Jane Probert

Jane Probert qualified as a Registered General Nurse and Registered Sick‑Children’s Nurse in 1987. She began her career on the pediatric wards of The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and later the Royal Bolton Hospital, where she cared for acutely ill and surgical children from birth to 16 years of age. Over the past 25 years she has devoted herself to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department, specialising in emergency paediatric medicine. In this setting she has progressed from staff nurse to Sister, and ultimately to Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner (APNP) and Non‑Medical Prescriber. Her clinical repertoire spans rapid assessment, stabilization, and definitive treatment of seriously ill or injured children, drawing on three decades of hands‑on experience across acute, surgical, and emergency environments.

In addition to her frontline A&E role, Probert has extended her expertise to out‑of‑hours primary care, providing advanced nursing support for the Bury and Bolton GP service. This work has broadened her perspective on community‑based paediatric emergencies and reinforced her ability to deliver high‑quality care across a range of settings. Her academic credentials include an MSc (Hons) Advanced Nurse Practitioner degree from Salford University (2008) and completion of a non‑medical prescribing programme at the University of Bolton (2011), qualifications that underpin her autonomous prescribing and advanced clinical decision‑making.

Ms Probert’s professional passion lies in advancing paediatric practice within emergency medicine. She is particularly committed to the early identification and rapid stabilisation of critically ill children, striving to integrate evidence‑based interventions that improve outcomes. Her interest also encompasses the development of robust pathways for paediatric trauma and medical emergencies, ensuring that children receive timely, coordinated care from presentation through discharge.

A further area of focus is the optimisation of non‑medical prescribing within paediatric emergency settings. By leveraging her prescribing qualification, Probert seeks to streamline medication delivery, reduce treatment delays, and enhance multidisciplinary collaboration. She remains actively engaged with research and quality‑improvement initiatives aimed at refining clinical protocols, reducing adverse events, and promoting family‑centred care in high‑stress environments.

Probert is a dedicated educator who regularly conducts in‑service training sessions for nursing staff, junior doctors, and allied health professionals. She designs and delivers curricula on paediatric assessment, emergency pharmacology, and non‑medical prescribing, drawing on her extensive clinical experience to provide realistic, case‑based learning. In her current role as senior practitioner within the Children’s Emergency Department, Probert oversees the junior paediatric clinicians, offering guidance and advice to support their clinical decision‑making. She is responsible for maintaining an appropriate clinical skill mix within the staffing rota, ensuring that the department is consistently equipped to meet fluctuating patient demands.
