Mr Simon Lammy

Mr Simon Lammy is a consultant neurosurgeon at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. During his neurosurgical training at the Institute of Neurological Sciences (INS) he was profiled in The Lancet Neurology and The Sunday Post and subsequently appointed an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. His clinical expertise spans brain and spinal tumours, degenerative cervical and lumbar spine disease, Chiari malformations, cerebro‑spinal‑fluid and hydrodynamic disorders, surgical management of stroke disorders, traumatic brain and spinal injuries, and the full spectrum of general neurosurgical conditions. He completed an RCS‑England senior clinical fellowship in neuro‑oncology in Nottingham after achieving his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the INS in May 2024. This followed an OOPR clinical‑research fellowship at the School of Cancer Sciences, Glasgow, where he worked under Professor Anthony Chalmers and served as a Tessa Jowell Brain MATRIX NIHR associate principal investigator. He has also held the role of RCS‑England associate surgical‑specialty lead in neurosurgery and has undertaken numerous managerial and leadership responsibilities, including representing trainees on the MSN Neurosurgery committee. Throughout his training Mr Lammy performed more than 1600 operative cases (ST1‑ST8) and regularly refreshed his ATLS certification to stay current with Level 1 trauma‑care protocols. He has been a co‑principal investigator on five prospective BNTRC cohort studies, contributed to several COVIDSurg investigations, and supervised over 40 medical students and junior doctors during their neurosurgical rotations. His scholarly output exceeds 60 peer‑reviewed publications and 40 conference presentations, and he routinely delivers teaching at RCS‑England and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE).

Mr Lammy’s clinical interests remain focused on the management of complex brain and spinal tumours, degenerative cervical and lumbar spine pathology, Chiari malformations, surgical management of stroke disorders, cerebro‑spinal‑fluid and hydrodynamic issues, as well as the acute and chronic sequelae of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury. These interests inform both his operative practice and his ongoing research agenda. He is currently the regional Lead for Neuro Trauma.

An Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, Mr Lammy completed a senior clinical fellowship in neuro oncology in Nottingham and an OOPR research fellowship at Glasgow’s School of Cancer Sciences. He serves as a Tessa Jowell Brain MATRIX NIHR associate PI and is pursuing a PhD focused on glioblastoma biology. Additional research interests include the pathophysiology and management of traumatic brain injury, malignant middle cerebral artery infarction, and the broader neurosurgical care of acute neuro critical patients.

Mr Lammy possesses extensive postgraduate teaching experience. He regularly delivers neurosurgical teaching for physicians at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and serves as a supervising consultant on a joint Queen’s Square (London)–Queen’s (Nottingham) neurosurgery course. He is a faculty member of the Aberdeen FRCS Neurosurgery Viva Course and was recently appointed a Section I question writer for the FRCS (Neuro.Surg) examination by the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE). Earlier in his career he acted as Faculty Tutor and Course Director for the START Course at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, taught the CCrISP curriculum, and contributed to the Core Surgery national teaching programme across the United Kingdom. His commitment to education is reflected in the revision and publication of the 2nd and 3rd editions of Surgical Critical Care for the MRCS OSCE and numerous articles in RCSEd Surgeons’ News.

Mr Lammy revised and published the second and third editions of Surgical Critical Care for the MRCS OSCE and has also published extensively in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s Surgeons’ News. He has served as Co-Principal Investigator on five published BNTRC prospective cohort studies, in addition to contributing to multiple COVIDSurg collaborative studies. During his neurosurgical training, he supervised more than 40 medical students and junior doctors. His academic portfolio includes over 60 publications and more than 40 presentations, many of which are indexed on PubMed and available for review.

Mr Lammy’s managerial experience began early, serving as University of London Medical Students Officer (2005-2006) where he coordinated pan London representation to national bodies such as the GMC and BMA. He subsequently held the presidency of the UCL Medical School Students’ Union (2006-2007), honing skills in advocacy for educational policy and curriculum design. As a senior resident at the INS (2020-2021) he oversaw the scheduling and coordination of all neurosurgical registrars in a high volume centre. From 2021-2023 he acted as RCS England Associate Surgical Specialty Lead in Neurosurgery, facilitating the establishment of neurosurgical trials across the UK, and served on the Society of British Neurological Surgeons National Audit Programme, contributing to the development of nationwide neurosurgical audit standards. He also participated in the Managed Services Network Neurosurgery academic working group (2021-2023) and the RCS England CCrISP curriculum development team (2022-2023). In his current consultant role he is the educational lead for the Department of Neurosurgery at Nottingham and for the East Midlands Cancer Alliance in neuro oncology.
