Mr Derek Lang

Mr Lang has been a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Wythenshawe Hospital, part of the Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust, for over 23 years and until recently, was the Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition to dealing with elective orthopaedic procedures of the lower limbs – particularly knee procedures – he has provided a general on-call emergency service for the Major Trauma Centre in Manchester, which covers a large area of the North West of England. He also works closely with the plastic and reconstructive surgeons at the Wythenshawe Hospital in joint management of serious trauma.

Mr Lang has a special interest in musculoskeletal trauma, sporting injuries to the lower limb, arthroscopic surgery of the knee, knee ligament reconstruction, and primary knee and hip replacement. He has an extensive experience of hip surgery for trauma and reconstruction, currently providing senior support for the regional Hip Fracture Unit at the Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Lang is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. He is responsible for the training and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of orthopaedics, trauma and in particular, disorders of the knee. He is also frequently invited to lecture on lower limb reconstruction at both national and international lectures.

Mr Lang has published widely in peer-reviewed journals on lower limb reconstruction. He is currently researching the correction of long bone deformity and fracture healing assessment using echosonography and callus mapping.
