Mr Jonathan Hobson

Mr Hobson is a Consultant Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)/Head & Neck Surgeon at the Wythenshawe Hospital; part of the University of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. He is the Lead Thyroid Surgeon at the hospital, performing over 40 thyroidectomy operations per year and is a core member of the Manchester Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. He is also the Clinical Director for Specialist Surgery at the hospital; this comprises of plastic surgery & burns, trauma & orthopaedic surgery and ENT & maxillofacial surgery. The Directorate has a full-time equivalent head count of over 300 people, and a turnover in excess of £30m per annum.

Mr Hobson treats problems with hearing and deafness, otitis media with effusion, age related hearing loss, tinnitus and eustachian tube dysfunction, dizziness and vertigo, ear infections, perforated ear drum and cholesteatoma, protruding ears, sinus infection and rhino-sinusitis, endoscopic sinus surgery, nasal injuries, nasal polyps, tumours of the nose, nasal obstruction, disorders of the sense of smell, adenoid problems, tonsillitis, hoarseness and laryngitis, swallowing problems, upper airway breathing problems, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, cancer affecting the thyroid as well as thyroid and parathyroid problems in general.

Mr Hobson's research interests include simulation and training, medical education, outcomes of surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea and thyroid surgery. He has been a reviewer for several specialist peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Rhinology & Allergy and Clinical Otolaryngology.

Mr Hobson is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and has been invited to lecture both nationally and internationally on topics related to his research interests: thyroid surgery, obstructive sleep apnoea, simulation and training and medical education in general.

Mr Hobson has published 25 original articles in peer-reviewed journals, three review articles in peer-reviewed journals, 10 commissioned articles and several case reports in peer-reviewed journals. He has been a reviewer for several specialist peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Rhinology & Allergy and Clinical Otolaryngology. He has given 39 national and international presentations to specialist societies between 1997 and 2018.
