Mr Matthew Izett-Kay

Mr Izett-Kay currently practices as a Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist Urogynaecologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals, Oxford. Mr Izett-Kay qualified from the University of Exeter in 2010. He then spent over ten years training in London within Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including four years at two of the UK’s leading tertiary Urogynaecology Departments, Kings College Hospital and University College London Hospitals. He spent a further two years completing subspecialty training at the John Radcliffe, Oxford University Hospitals. He was awarded his MD (Res) doctoral degree from the University College London (UCL) in 2021.

Mr Izett-Kay has a clinical and academic specialist interest in laparoscopic urogynaecology and complex tertiary pelvic floor disorders as well as general gynaecology. This includes vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence, birth trauma, overactive bladder, urinary tract infection, bladder pain, vaginal mesh, mesh complications, chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, key-hole surgery, period/menstrual problems, and ovarian cysts.

Mr Izett-Kay is an active inter-disciplinary funded researcher within the Oxford University Hospitals and has experience in clinical research, primary qualitative research, and evidence synthesis. He is currently collaborating nationally and internationally on active funded projects. This includes as co-applicant on a successful National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) bid, 202450 Qualitative Research on Women’s Experience of Urogynaecological Health Services with the Oxford University’s health experience Research Group. He is also in active collaboration with the Clinical Urology and Epidemiology (CLUE) working group in Finland on venous thromboembolism (VTE) risks after gynaecological surgery. Mr Izett-Kay’s MD (Res) doctoral thesis focused on laparoscopic uterine-preserving prolapse operation and the role of synthetic mesh. His research covers a wide depth of topics including urinary tract infections, therapeutic techniques for overactive bladder, complications following laparoscopic mesh sacrohysteropexy, and birth/perineal trauma. He is peer reviewer for a number of journals including the International Urogynecology Journal (IUJ) and the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (EJOG).

Mr Izett-Kay co-provides teaching and training within Oxford’s Subspecialty Urogynaecology Training Programme, as well as undergraduate education for the University of Oxford. He regularly receives awards and nominations, both locally and regionally, for training provided to junior doctors, particularly within the field of laparoscopy. He has developed and taught on revision courses in both the Middle East and India for the Part 1 Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) and co-founded a revision website that provides a podcast-led study platform.

Mr Izett-Kay has authored numerous grant-funded original research papers in peer-reviewed journals, has authored several book chapters, and delivers regular podium presentations internationally with respect to his research.

Mr Izett-Kay is Chair of the International Urogynecological Association’s FTECP committee. He co-developed and delivered a novel online education company to train post-graduate doctors. He has been a medical representative at both trust and deanery level as well as within medico-politics.
