Mr Shailinder Jit Singh

Mr Singh is a Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in Nottingham UK. I am also Co Chairman of Medical Staff Committee where he represents 800 Consultants from all specialties to Hospital Board. India: Mr Singh started his career as a trainee in Surgery at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh (India) in 1987. Having completed six years of General and Paediatric Surgery, in 1993 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery at PGIMER. UK, Kuwait & Australia: Mr Singh moved to the United Kingdom in 1994 and embarked on higher paediatric surgical training for four years leading to a Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST).  Mr Singh then worked in Kuwait as a ‘visiting Professor in Paediatric Surgery’ for four months. This was followed by two and half years of fellowship in clinical research at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney. UK: Mr Singh was appointed as Consultant Pediatric Surgeon in 2001 at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust, Nottingham UK. Following his interest developed in Australia, he went on to establish the now Bastow Clinical Investigative Unit in Paediatric Gastrointestinal Physiology at Nottingham University Hospitals. The Bastow Unit is now completely functional and is well recognised both nationally and internationally. Mr Singh was invited by the Ministry of Health from Kuwait to set up a similar facility there. The Bastow Unit has produced original and pioneering research on pelvic ultrasound (for the diagnosis of megarectum) and gastric emptying studies in children. Mr Singh was granted the degree of DM (Doctor of Medicine) from the Nottingham University in 2008 based on his research and dissertation on surgical management of constipation. Mr Singh was involved in work on WHO check list while at Nottingham in 2010. Mr Singh has served as Lead Clinician (Division Chief), Service Lead for Children's Surgery and Critical Care (Surgeon in Chief and Chief of Paediatric Intensive Care), Service Lead for Children’s Surgery and Paediatric Gastroenterology (Surgeon in Chief with Chief of Paediatric Gastroenterology) at Nottingham University Hospital, UK. Mr Singh has also served as Programme Director for Paediatric Surgery at NUH. USA: Mr Singh took two academic appointments to work in USA. The first one was at Children’s National Medical Centre in Washington DC. There he took the job of Attending Paediatric Urologist and Paediatric Surgeon at that gave him insight into the medical training and health delivery system in North America. The second one finished in August 2019 at West Virginia University Hospitals, West Virginia USA for 2 years and 3 months. Mr Singh served as Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Surgery.

Mr Singh has clinical interests in Neonatal Surgery, Paediatric Trauma, Paediatric Gastrointestinal conditions, Paediatric General Surgery, and all aspects of Paediatric Surgical care.

Mr Singh has been working on a pilot project on enteral feeding device in collaboration with the engineering department of WVU. The project seeks to design, fabricate, and test an enteral feeding tube system that can deliver nutritional and/or medicinal fluids in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of patients who have suffered a partial or complete loss of intestinal motility. The design of wich uses complex engineering principles and computational fluid dynamics to be able to make workable prototypes. The successful implementation of this device will save lives of people who cannot afford TPN typically people in the developing world; it will help save livers where prolonged TPN without trophic feeds damages the liver and lower the length of hospital stays for short-term TPN dependent patients.

Mr Singh has held various teaching positions internationally, educating undergraduate and postgraduate students in the UK, US, India, and Australia. These include; Medical students at University Hospital and City Hospital (University of Nottingham), UK, Medical students at The Children's Hospital at Westmead and City Hospital (University of Sydney-SCORPIOS Teachings) Sydney, Australia, Medical students at University Hospital and City Hospital (University of Nottingham), UK SCORPIOS Teachings and Training sessions for Suturing. Medical students at CNMC Washington DC, Medical students at University Hospital Nottingham, Medical students at WVU Hospitals, Postgraduates in General Surgery at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PIMER), Chandigarh, INDIA to name but a few.
