Clinical practice experience

Mr Peters graduated from the University of Southampton in 2004 and subsequently embarked on a career in paediatric surgery. Following his foundation years he entered higher surgical training, rotating through several of the United Kingdom's leading children's hospitals - including Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, and Birmingham.

Since completing his training, Mr Peters has been appointed Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH). In this role he delivers acute and elective surgical care to children across the North West, overseeing a clinical practice that spans routine procedures to highly specialised interventions.

Clinical interests

Mr Peters' clinical focus lies in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal surgery within the paediatric population. He spent two years completing both adult and paediatric thoracic fellowships, gaining expertise that now positions him as one of only three surgeons in Manchester offering super specialised care for children born with oesophageal atresia. This niche interest complements his broader commitment to managing congenital lung malformations, gastro oesophageal reflux disease, and long term vascular access.

In addition to his thoracic work, Mr Peters maintains an extensive laparoscopic practice and has recently incorporated robotic surgery into his repertoire. His operative portfolio includes procedures for congenital lung lesions, repair of oesophageal atresia, fundoplication for reflux, cholecystectomy for gallstones. placement of long term vascular access devices. as well as routine paediatric operations such as inguinal hernia repair and orchidopexy for undescended testis.

Teaching & training

At RMCH, Mr Peters is actively engaged in the education of the next generation of surgeons. He supervises higher surgical trainees, providing hands on operative teaching and assessment of clinical competence. Moreover, he serves as the Education Lead for the North West Paediatric Surgery Consortium, coordinating regional training initiatives, organising teaching sessions, and fostering collaborative learning among trainees and consultants.

Summary of publications

Mr Peters has co‑authored a series of papers that showcase the breadth of his paediatric surgical expertise, ranging from congenital thoracic conditions to upper gastrointestinal surgery. He led case-series investigating how the timing of resection influences inflammatory responses in congenital lung malformations (Eur J Pediatr Surg  33 1: 81‑84) and the outcomes of gastrostomies in ventilated children (Pediatr Surg Int 38 4:569-572). He has contributed to case‑series on large hiatus hernias requiring patch hiatoplasty (J Pediatr Surg 61 2: 162600) and a seminal report highlighting the under‑recognised congenital oesophageal stenosis in oesophageal atresia patients (Pediatr Surg Int 382: 331‑335). He wrote a book chapter on congenital parenchymal structural lung lesions published in the European Respiratory Society monograph (92: 164‑178) and described thoracoscopic debridement for empyema thoracis (J Pediatr Surg 55 1: 2187‑2190).
