Mr Max Almond

Mr Almond is a Consultant in General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgery. His practice is based at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust where he is the Clinical Lead for General Surgery. Following his registrar training, Mr Almond gained further specialist experience through surgical Fellowships to the Istituto Dei Tumori, Milan, and the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He developed specialist skills in therapeutic endoscopy through Fellowships to Harvard University, Boston; the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, US. Mr Almond treats complex abdominal and retroperitoneal tumours which are referred to him from a wide geographical area stretching from Wales to King’s Lynn, including quaternary referrals from Cambridge and Nottingham. He treats a variety of rare pathologies including sarcomas, neuroendocrine tumours, gastrointestinal stromal tumours and adrenal tumours. His benign practice includes laparoscopic surgery for gallstones, hiatal hernias, acid reflux, abdominal wall and groin hernias. He undertakes major abdominal trauma surgery when on-call at University Hospital Birmingham which is a level 1 trauma centre. He also performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and ERCP (endoscopic removal of gallstones).

Mr Almond has special interests in Abdominal Cancer Surgery, Abdominal Trauma, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery including cholecystectomy, General Surgery and ERCP. He has worked on medicolegal cases involving abdominal trauma, work-related abdominal injury, emergency and elective general surgical negligence including mismanagement of hepatobiliary disease and abdominal cancer.

Mr Almond’s main research interests are in the fields of abdominal oncology and gastro-oesophageal reflux including Barrett’s oesophagus. He has received grants from the Royal College of Surgeons of England to support his work in these fields and has published more than 120 peer reviewed papers.

Mr Almond is an honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and a surgical tutor on behalf of the European School of Soft Tissue Sarcoma Surgery. He also runs the Royal College of Surgeons Sarcoma Fellowship scheme.

Mr Almond has published over 120 research articles and book chapters, including publications in Nature and the British Journal of Surgery. He has recently co-authored National and International guidelines on the management of GIST and Retroperitoneal Sarcoma.

Mr Almond is the Clinical Lead for Upper GI and General Surgery at University Hospital Birmingham. He was previously the Clinical Governance Lead in Emergency General Surgery across three large acute Hospitals.
