Tracheostomy Expert Witnesses

A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure whereby an incision is made at the front of the neck and a tube is inserted into the trachea (windpipe), allowing respiration to bypass the mouth. A tracheostomy may be performed as an emergency, for example in the case of acute airway obstruction, however it is more commonly performed in the case of longterm illness where mechanical ventilation is required.
