Mr Nicholas Symons

Mr Symons has served as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals since 2019, delivering a comprehensive range of colorectal and emergency general surgical services. He completed his surgical training in London at the Royal London and Royal Free Hospitals, followed by a fellowship in advanced malignancy at the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute in Basingstoke, where he refined his expertise in complex oncologic procedures. In his current role, Mr Symons acts as the Clinical Lead for Colorectal Surgery, oversees the lower gastrointestinal multidisciplinary team (MDT), and spearheads the colorectal robotic‑surgery programme at Oxford, ensuring the integration of cutting‑edge technology into routine practice.

In addition to his operative responsibilities, Mr Symons is actively involved in service development and quality‑improvement initiatives across the Trust. He has been a key leader in the redesign of the urgent suspected cancer pathway, which now meets the challenging national benchmarks. He has contributed to development of a new service for the management of high-risk anal dysplasia and routinely audits surgical outcomes, coordinating with the National Bowel Cancer Audit to drive evidence-based improvements.

By driving the adoption of novel methods of managing anastomotic leak and by reduction in the routine use of ileostomies, his leadership has resulted in measurable reductions in postoperative complications and shorter lengths of stay for colorectal patients, reinforcing his reputation as a clinician‑scientist committed to high‑quality patient care.

Mr Symons’s clinical portfolio encompasses the full spectrum of colorectal and emergency general surgery, with a particular focus on lower gastrointestinal malignancies. His elective practice is centred on the management of colon, rectal, and anal cancers, where he applies both conventional and minimally invasive techniques, including robotic‑assisted resections, to optimise oncologic outcomes while preserving function. He also possesses specialised skills in the treatment of locally advanced pelvic tumours, performing complex exenterative procedures that may involve urological and gynaecological structures when required.

Beyond malignancy, Mr Symons treats all categories of proctological disease, hernias, pelvic‑floor disorders, and trauma. He is recognised for his proficiency in functional bowel surgery, particularly the assessment and management of postoperative bowel dysfunction following rectal cancer resection. His comprehensive approach to emergency general surgery ensures rapid, evidence‑based interventions for acute abdominal pathologies, reflecting his commitment to delivering safe, high‑quality care across both elective and urgent settings.

Mr Symons earned his PhD from Imperial College London, where his thesis examined patient safety, quality of care, and outcomes in emergency general surgery, generating several high‑impact peer‑reviewed publications. He currently leads two randomised controlled trials in Oxford: one evaluating novel staging techniques for rectal cancer, and another investigating strategies to mitigate bowel dysfunction after rectal resection. His earlier research activities included extensive involvement with trainee research collaboratives and three years at the helm of the London Surgical Research Group, during which he facilitated numerous multicentre studies.

A GMC‑recognised educational supervisor, Mr Symons mentors surgical trainees, participates regularly in annual review panels, and serves as an examiner for Oxford University medical‑student clinical examinations. He also leads the colorectal robotic‑surgical training programme in Oxford, delivering hands‑on training to ensure the next generation of surgeons acquire proficiency in advanced minimally invasive techniques.

In his capacity as Clinical Lead for colorectal surgery at Oxford, Mr Symons chairs the lower gastrointestinal MDT, coordinates multidisciplinary care pathways, and represents the Oxford Chapter of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland on the Association’s council. He previously directed the urgent suspected‑cancer pathway for colorectal malignancies within the Trust and served as Chairman of the London Surgical Research Group collaborative, overseeing large‑scale multicentre research projects and fostering a culture of collaborative investigation.
