Carotid Artery Expert Witnesses

Carotid refers to the carotid arteries, the major blood vessels in the neck that carry blood to the brain, head and face. Carotid artery disease occurs when one or both arteries become narrowed by fatty deposits known as plaques. This narrowing can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or stroke. Cases involving carotid artery disease can raise complex medico-legal questions. These may relate to diagnosis, atherosclerosis, the severity of arterial narrowing, investigations and timing of treatment. Experts may also consider previous TIA or stroke, vascular imaging, treatment decisions, carotid intervention, causation and subsequent outcomes. Experts may review medical records, carotid ultrasound imaging, angiographic investigations and treatment documentation.
