Dr Melanie Greaves

Dr Greaves completed her undergraduate training at Royal Free Hospital, University of London, in 1986. She undertook her postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at University College Hospital and The Middlesex Hospital before completing her radiology training at the University College Hospital London, the Freeman Hospital Newcastle Upon Tyne and the University of California. Since 1999, Dr Greaves has been a Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. She has over 25 years' experience as a Cardiothoracic Radiologist in tertiary centres covering all aspects of thoracic radiology, cardiac CT and cardiac MR. She is a regional Lead Radiologist for interstitial and occupational lung disease and supports all other thoracic specialities, including cancer imaging and the lung cancer screening programme. In addition to her NHS responsibilities, Dr Greaves plays an active role in radiology medicine education by providing regular regional, national and international lectures and tutorials.

Dr Greaves has an interest in all aspects of diagnostic thoracic radiology, cardiac CT and cardiac MR. Areas of particular expertise include interstitial and occupational lung disease.

Dr Greaves provides radiological support for research in all aspects of thoracic imaging. Wythenshawe Hospital is a tertiary cardiothoracic centre and an active research establishment. Most recently she has been involved in the lung cancer screening pilot, the Salford COPD study and the Tristan Study; an EU multicentre international study for the diagnosis of drug induced lung disease.

Dr Greaves has regularly educated undergraduates and postgraduates over the past 20 years. During the period 1995-1998, Dr Greaves was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Keele University. At present, she is a Manchester Medical School OSCE examiner and a trained facilitator for Junior Doctors. She provides comprehensive day courses on thoracic radiology to both radiology and respiratory medicine and lectures both nationally and internationally. Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic she has continued to give tutorials and lectures online again both nationally and internationally. She is currently working on a national pulmonary fibrosis educational programme for thoracic physicians, an upcoming presentation on pulmonary fibrosis for the European Society of Radiology and will be contributing to an occupational lung disease session for the British Thoracic Society in summer 2021. She is a Royal College of Radiologists final examiner for the Fellowship in Clinical Radiology.

Dr Greaves has published over 15 peer-reviewed publications, 10 chapters in textbooks, 7 case reports, abstracts and has been included in scientific exhibits that have received certificates of merit. She is a regular reviewer for British Journal Radiology. As Regional Radiology Lead for interstitial lung disease, Dr Greaves is regularly invited to present at regional, national and international lectures.
