An inferior vena cava (IVC) filter is a small device that a specialist, such as an Interventional Radiologist, will place in the large vein of the abdomen responsible for returning blood from the legs to the heart. The aim of the IVC filter is to prevent blood clots in the lower limbs from travelling to the lungs and heart i.e., pulmonary emboli.
